Harley Davidson’s all new 2007 883R Fuel Injected Sportster with it’s free revving engine, sporty handling and good looks is the best Sporty to come out of the HD stable, but that’s not good enough for some.
Mayors Motorcycles took an 883R straight from the crate and set about improving its performance. We stripped off the top end and machined the barrels to accept the new 1200cc wiesco pistons, removed the original cams and fitted a new set of Andrews N4 cams.
The engine was rebuilt using Cometic MLS (multi layer steel) gaskets and refitting the original 883 heads for sharper acceleration. A set of Vance and Hines slip on mufflers sorted the gas extraction. A very trick inlet set up, which consisted of a billet ‘Hyper Force’ multi plate throttle body bracket by ‘Pistor’ and a ‘Force Winder’ K&N air filter sorted out the intake. The Pistor bracket uses internal drillings to vent the head so no more unsightly vent pipes and no more oil dripping from the air box. This was finished off by two very neat covers to shield the injector body and injectors from view.
Of course an 883 Sporty with this amount of modification doesn’t have a chance of fuelling it self properly, even with O2 sensors, so Mayors Motorcycles joined forces with Kitech Performance who have the only pre-production unit to properly refuel the bike in the UK. The ‘Power Pro fueler,’ is the same size as a credit card and only 11mm thick, this unit is perfect for the Sporty as the new frame, extra wiring and plugs mean that the usual refuelers will be to bulky and difficult to mount.
Fitting the Kitech Power Pro fueler was simple, It took around 30 minutes, the seat, side panels and the fuel tank mounting bolts were removed and the tank was raised up to allow for hand room around the injectors. The original injector plugs were disconnected and plugged into the PowerPro harness and then the PowerPro injector plugs were re-fitted to the injectors. The O2 sensor connections were just as easy. The PowerPro harness was then tie wrapped to the existing HD wiring harness and the electronic control unit found a home inside the left side panel where it was secured by a Velcro patch.
Set up and tuning was easy, using 3 built in buttons on the controller front panel giving access to 5 modes. These modes were accessed and modified in a similar way to a carburettor, idle/cruise, accelerator pump and main jet. Two further modes are used to adjust the accelerator pump and main jet sensitivity.
The tuning and fuel adjustments were taken care of at Mayor Motorcycles using the latest Dynamometer from Dyna Pro, UK’s only Bemsee and MRO recognised control dyno and gives 100% accurate readings and true rear wheel horse power. The result of all this technology was a respectable 62% increase in horse power and loads of lovely torque without compromising ridability.
